Lothar Hempel – The Story of the Old New Girls

Working across a wide range of media, German artist Lothar Hempel (B.1966 Cologne) stages elaborate theatrical possibilities, placing the viewer as an autonomous character engaging in his constructed dramas according to their free will. Stemming from an interest in value and identification systems, Hempel’s paintings exist as potential casts for his interactive dilemmas.

For his fourth solo exhibition, Lothar Hempel presents a new series of paintings that mix oil color, crayon, collage, acrylic, print, stains, drips, scratches, shed dings, smears and splatters. These intriguing pairings are filled with unintentional signs that result from the multiplicity of the layers applied by the artist, who wants to take us on an adventure in an unknown story: The Story of the Old New Girls.
